What a long month January seems to be!! The last weeks of 2007 were days - and nights - filled with the sight and smell of many wonderful, delicious foods - many of which, those of us who are diabetic, must learn to avoid or at least consume in moderation.
Now January is here and, for most of Canada, this has been a January made up of cold temperatures and lots of snow. It is only the 19th of January and already cabin fever has struck!! I enjoy sharing meals with friends and having the opportunity to practice my "diabetiquetic"! I am disabled and although I am fairly mobile with the use of a walker and my car, when I am able to go to my parking spot. However, my "wings are clipped" during this winter as I have been told I have to stay away from ice and snow. It would be so nice to go to a restaurant with friends and have the fun of choosing a meal from the menu which is appetizing and also diabetic - friendly. Instead, I have searched my apartment for tempting food - what is here is frozen in an uncooked state or so rich I know that I would feel quite unwell if I succomb to temption and eat it - having done this before!
I am not complaining, just looking for the humour in a January day. Enjoy the crisp sunny days and the time to play in the snow, as well as the times you may have to practice your diabetiquetic!

Hi. I also live in Canada,
Hi. I also live in Canada, in N.B. and we to have had snow, snow and more snow. At the present we do not have a car and taxies are so expensive. I live with my grand-daughter and great grand-daughter. You do feel like you are boxed in at times. The suggestion to invite friends in for a pot luck sounds like a great idea. Maybe you could share some of your recepies with them. Any one can enjoy diabetic food. Do you have e-mail/ Trading emails could be fun. Dee Dee
I think a key thing to
I think a key thing to living in Canada (I live in ON and we are in a major cold snap -40 with wind chill) is taking what you have and 'running' with it. My boyfrined and I will often decide to have a 'dinner' party for just the three of us. We even buy my daughter non-alcoholic wine so that she can join in the fun. It is all what you make out of it. We have picnic's in the living room since we can't outside, we make food that fits the 'theme'. Try new recipes or food items.

Cleo, are you able to get
Cleo, are you able to get grocieries delivered to your home? Why not invite friends in, take the time to try a new diatetic recipe. God knows there are lots out there and some that even sound exciting! If you can't do all the work make it a potluck. I'm sure that your friends that are more mobile are feeling the same way you are!
